Porous Coverage

FJORD is pleased to present Porous Coverage, a group show featuring work by Wesley Chavis, Sarah Coote, J. Avery Theodore Daisey, Anthony Iacono and Rachel Klinghoffer. 

The paintings, sculptures and videos in the exhibition collage various materials collected from personal archives, cultural artifacts and painted parts. The result is a porous coverage, one with fragmentation and flexibility for growth. Their surfaces seduce the viewer into believing their structure is solid and clean, only to witness the spillage of parts once the wholeness is exposed.

Wesley Chavis is a visual artist and vocalist living in Richmond, VA who graduated with a BA in Art from Yale University. He seeps within the spiritual and cultural crevices of Black American community by deconstructing personal sites of love and belonging, his intimate family history, Christian church roots, and by examining the political presence of his body and the racial violence that displaces it. He privileges the power of invisible spirits, prayer, and the lingering specter of his secret mourning to sensuously communicate beyond the visual and verbal cues of his objects and audio recordings. His faith lies in unseen, yet perceivable forces to emotionally transform people and gently guide us into new curiosities about our respective cultural, physical and spiritual selves.

Sarah Coote (http://www.sarahcoote.com/)
Sarah Coote, born in 1991, is an artist and curator currently based in Richmond, VA. She received her Bachelors in Fine Arts in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2013 and is currently a Masters Candidate at Virginia Commonwealth University studying Painting + Printmaking. Her practice involves painting and collage with found materials including domestic and gendered tools for appearance (rug mats, beauty products, veils and curtains) and characters of social media and popular culture. She is interested in visual repetition, dollhouses and deconstructing social performance. Her work has been exhibited at the Depot Gallery, Volume Exhibit, New Boone, Metropolitan Gallery and Vox Populi among others. She was a member at FJORD between 2013-2015 where she previously co-curated Interface with Gee Wesley through George Berkeley Projects.

J. Avery Theodore Daisey (http://theodoredaisey.com/)
J. Avery Theodore Daisey was born and raised in the Deep South, where they were inherently projected into spaces steeped in sexist, racist, and classist models. This biographical occurrence drives the meat of their work, existing as an always-questioning-why-anti-normative-queer-horror-vixen. Currently employing performance, video, text, sound, and web-based media to consistently live in a state of questioning; rivaling power structures, hetero-normativity, disambiguation, hierarchal systems, “real-ness,” individuality, societal horror, and what it means to be humyn. J. Avery received their BFA at Winthrop University in South Carolina.

Anthony Iacono (http://anthonyiacono.com/)
Anthony Iacono was born in 1987 in New York. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2010 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2013. His practice employs collage, painting, sculpture, photography and video to recontextualize quotidian objects in absurd and fetishistic narratives. His first solo-exhibition titled, Crudités at Sunset opened at PPOW Gallery in New York in the summer of 2015. He has been included in group shows at Rockaway Topless, Ed. Varie, 106 Green and Torrance Shipman. In addition to his interdisciplinary practice, Iacono also produces artist books.

Rachel Klinghoffer, born in 1982 received her Masters in Fine Arts in Painting with honors from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with course work in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. Recent shows include a solo project at SPRING/BREAK 2015 New York, NY and group exhibitions at Interface Gallery, Oakland, CA, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Philadelphia, PA; Ms. Barber's, Los Angeles, CA; Cuevas Tilleard, New York, NY, Projekt722, Brooklyn, NY and Trestle Projects, Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been included in New American Paintings and reviewed by Hyperallergic.com as well as Title Magazine and featured on LittlePaperPlanes.com, FieldProjectsGallery.com,BullandRam.blogspot.com, Zeek.com and Jewcy.com. Observer.com named her one of the promising names in 2016.
